Know How To Grind Coffee Beans

By Bernard Bowers

Air is the enemy of all coffee drinkers. The reason is that once exposed to air, coffee will lose its flavor. That is why you will notice that instant coffee on sale are very carefully sealed by the manufacturers in order to preserve its taste and aroma which will fade once the container is opened. The more discriminating coffee lover will settle for nothing less than freshly ground coffee. But do you know how to grind your coffee beans properly?

Different types of coffee calls for different types of grinds. Obviously, you will need to know how your coffee grinder works so that you can grind the coffee according to your specifications.

If you plan on brewing your coffee with a percolator or a French Press coffee maker then you'll need a coarser grind. Place the coffee beans in your coffee grinder and tap the grind button a few times as you would use the pulse feature on your food processor. If the end product looks like very small pieces of coffee beans, then you are doing it correctly. If they appear too powdery, then you have to ease up and repeat the process making the necessary adjustments. You are not supposed to hold the button only, only to tap it intermittently.

On the other hand, automatic drip coffee makers are designed for medium grinds. Medium grinds coffee are sold in cans in the supermarkets. If you have seen the contents of the can, then you have an idea of the correct size. They can be described as looking like brown sand. It you can recall the look of brown sand wedged between your toes the last time you were at the beach, then you are right on the button. Once again, while holding the coffee grinder button, don't get carried away and over grind your coffee beans. If you grinded the coffee beans a little too fine, then you will not get good coffee.

The third way of grinding coffee is to press the grind button and hold it until the coffee beans are grinded into fine powder, and this is what you do with an espresso coffee maker. This should be easy because you can press the button as long as you like.

Nothing beats drinking a freshly ground coffee with its fresh taste and the aroma that can be smelled a mile away. You can prepare your freshly grinded coffee according to your taste. Once you are able to grind coffee beans perfectly, then you can proclaim yourself as a coffee connoisseur.
