Coffee is the drink that bridges races, cultures, religion and social strata. There are people who can only be fully roused up in the morning with a cup of coffee. Coffee has undergone changes over time but it has not lost any of its popularity. It has been since the day of its discovery. Coffee can trace its roots in Africa. The discovery was attributed to a goatherd who observed his goats eating berries and acting strange afterwards. He ate some too and liked what he tasted.
From then on, the berry which coffee came from was produced in many places mostly in the Arabian Peninsula. Coffee reached Europe in the 1600s and in the Americas, Brazil started producing coffee in the 1700s. In 1901 instant coffee was invented, decaffeinated in 1903 and freeze dried in 1938. Coffee now is the second most produce product in the world.
The average annual coffee consumption of a person is 10 pounds, total world consumption is 400 billion cups a year, and fully half the population drink coffee in the United States. Most of the consumption is during breakfast and 35% prefer to have black coffee. Tea used to be the favorite beverage but coffee seems to have displaced it - especially after the Boston Tea Party and it was considered very patriotic to drink coffee instead of tea!
Columbia and Brazil accounts for the production of 3/4's of the world coffee and it is mostly handpicked there. Coffee is prepared from the seeds of a berry plant, and unroasted coffee beans will not spoil for up to two years. Coffee is best when consumed directly after roasting as the flavor decreases once you roast it.
