Green Smoothie Recipes For Salubrious Drinks - Get Your Vegetables Every Day

By Paula Cox

Generally when we think of smoothies we think of ice cream and cut price chemicals mixed with sugar in a delicious but unhealthy children's drink. However, the truth is that they are an entirely neutral canvas onto which we project our own hopes and fears. There are some seriously delicious vegetable blends out there, healthy and easy to make.

Although generally people tend to think of smoothies as fruit drinks, and vegetables as solid foods, all this could be about to change. People in southern parts of Asia and Latin America have been drinking their vegetables for thousands of years, and it provides refreshing nutrition for people all year round in the hills and mountains of the tribal lands.

Tomato juice is already a very popular drink, but perhaps you could take a leaf out of the people of southern Thailand and blend tomatoes, potatoes and onions into a delicious cold drink for summer days. None of the greens are fried or boiled, simply chopped up into a very fine paste and drunk quickly on hot days to put a spring in your step.

Spinach is also a surprisingly good addition to any smoothie. Although the harsh texture has led it to being much maligned in some schools of cooking, it's confrontational flavor finds an excellent match in the smoothie form. Combining spinach kale and citrus fruit is a terrible meal, but ground up it becomes a drink from the gods. Absolutely splendid.

Kale and Spinach is an especially delicious way to get your five a day. Instead of using citrus fruits try mixing in a mango to really make something that shines like the July sun. A stick of celery can be the final touch in a marvelous drink and snack combined.

These are just a few ideas for delicious green smoothies. As with all food and drink preparation the secret is to mix and match and change the blend until you find a combination that works for you.
