The Perfect Time for Cupcakes

By Anya Shiela Richards

It's winter time, and the weather is getting colder. At this time of the year, most people are changing their wardrobes for warmer clothing and switching on their central heating. It is also the time for making hot, thick winter soups and looking up your favorite cupcake recipes as you prepare for long, cold nights. At the same time, as December 25th approaches, the stores, streets, and homes are filled with the symbols of the season.

Cupcakes are as traditional during the Yuletide season as mistletoe, holly berries, and Christmas trees. None of these symbols are specifically Christian or religious in themselves, yet they have become very much a part of Christmas celebrations in many countries around the world.

Cupcakes can be considered as edible Christmas toppers. They are very easy to make, and they come in a variety of flavors - including chocolate, apple, Madeira, and many more. But the main fun in making them has to be icing or frosting them at the end. Today, there are so many cupcake frosting recipes that are available. Whole websites are devoted to decorating them, as are many volumes of cookery books. There are even coffee shops that sell a wide variety of cupcakes that are frosted in a rainbow of colors and a plethora of shapes. Many different materials are used, including fondant icing, marzipan, chocolate sprinkles, raisins, glace cherries, and small pieces of dried fruits.

If you are like many people who are interested in just the frosting, you can buy plain cupcakes and decorate them to your heart's content. The advantage to going this route is that you save time and end up with personalized cupcakes too.

If you wish to make cupcakes that fit the holiday season, you can paint Santa's face on a white frosting. Be creative: use icing for the colors, use edible gel for lines making his mouth and nose, and use candies, nuts, or dried fruit for his eyes. Be as creative as you dare to be. The results will always be different but all would be pleasing if you put extra care in making each one.

On the other hand, you may want to create a personal message with the cakes, such as a greeting or something with your name on. Here, you would make as many cakes as letters, and then decorate each one with the appropriate letter on the top. Set them out on the tray according to the correct order, and you have created a personal and individual message.

Decorating cupcakes does not have to be too difficult. It just involves a little creativity and a sense of fun. You do not even have to follow a specific recipe book. All you need to do is think of an idea and see if you can follow it through. This is what makes these cute little cakes such a great idea for any party or dessert. They do not cost too much money, time, or effort to make, yet they can be totally personal and a lot of fun.
