Making the Classic Fruit Smoothie

By Alison Simon

Fruit smoothies are an excellent addition to any meal plan. They're straightforward to make and are quite healthy for you too. You can make these delightful cool drinks with just about any sort of fruit or perhaps blend differing types of fruit. Here is how simple it is to make a fruit smoothie.

We'll get started with the stuff you are going to need. Straight off you're going to want a food processor to make tasty smoothies. A less costly model will get the job done just so you won't be asking it to deal with piles of of frozen, hard fruits. If that is the case, a somewhat more expensive unit with a more powerful motor will often be smart. But to get started with, any type blender will do. You might want to upgrade later once you experience how good and fulfilling a fruit smoothie is.

The fruit comes next. Smoothies are very easily made with all types of different fruit and much of the fun with smoothies comes from blending different fruits in a single recipe. Without question the 3 preferred fruits are Strawberries, Blueberries and Bananas.

Another great addition to almost any smoothie recipe is yogurt. Adding yogurt adds consistency and flavor as well as nutrition. The low or non-fat yogurts are the most figure-friendly but , depending on the fruits you choose; you are able to use nearly any sort of yogurt as well as any flavor. Lately more smoothie recipes are specifying Greek yogurt which is thicker than ordinary yogurt and offers more protein per serving.

Certainly your smoothie will need some sort of liquid to help blend the other stuff and make it easier to drink. Dependent on the mix fruit juices, milk of all kinds (whole, 2%, skim, soy, etc.), or water is employed most frequently. On occasion you may run across a recipe that depend on the fruits selected and don't use any liquid at all.

How much you use is totally down to you. Start out with a bit less than the recipe specifies and then add a bit to arrive at the consistency you choose. Ice cubes work to add both a needed bit of fluidity and cold to the drink.

Now that all of the ingredients are assembled it is time to talk of blending the mix. Start by mixing the fruit and yogurt a little bit then add whatever liquid is being used and mix away. Use the pulsing action on your blender (if it has it). That action lets the larger pieces for fruit to sink to the bottom of the container and get chopped up which makes sure that you are going to end up with a pleasantly smooth smoothie.

If it appears like the motor is working too hard to combine everything together add a dash more liquid to make sure everything moves around well.

Here's a good tip: When the smoothie recipe requires ice cubes, crush them in the processor before combining the rest of the ingredients. Crushing the ice first will help mix everything less complicated.

A large number of recipes call for frozen bananas because they provide a creamy texture, sweetness, and nutrition to the mix. But be certain to both peel and cut them before putting them in the freezer. Stored in a freezer bag till used, bananas will last rather a long time without freezer burn.
