How to Spice Up Your Guacamole Recipe

By Amy Turman

Guacamole may be the most commonly adored dip in the United States. From gourmet tacos and healthy salads to greasy rolled tacos and burritos from the nearby food wagon, guacamole adds a delightful and fresh twist to any type of cuisine.

Avocados are really incredibly good for you: the avocado oil itself is great for your hair, nails and overall internal health. It is not a lowcal snack, but when enjoyed moderately, avocados can meet that craving for greasy foods better than any other fruit or vegetable.

Many of us are guacamole purists and prefer a combo that's like a pureed avocado, while some others like to add mayonnaise for a creamy element. The classic best guacamole recipe includes lime juice, avocados, raw minced garlic, raw diced red onion, salt and pepper. This is a succulent base for any guacamole creation that you are looking to try. Adding creative twists will make your guacamole sing and impress your guests.

Hawaiian Guacamole

It may surprise you, but adding jalapeos and grilled pineapple to your guacamole is quite the combination. Remove the seeds and the pith from the raw jalapeos and dice it finely. To grill the pineapple, dice it into cubes that are about a centimeter wide, and grill it on saut pan until the corners begin to brown and cook in their own juices. Carefully fold in the cubed jalapeos and grilled pineapple to a chunkier guacamole. The raw jalapeos add a spicy crunch while the warm, caramelized pineapple adds a sweet bite with a delicious temperature contrast.

Spicy Asian Guacamole

With all the delectable Asian fusion food all around, it's exciting when a generally Mexican dish can have a special Asian style added to it. With this recipe, take the basic guacamole ingredients mentioned above, but rather than salt, add some soy sauce. The magic ingredient to this mixture is adding an extra clove of garlic, a touch of sesame oil, and some Sriracha hot sauce. The Sriracha hot sauce will add a depth of flavour that compliments the subtle creaminess of the avocado. The consistency of this dip should be more pureed instead of coarse.

Pico de Guacamole

Guacamole is healthy, but adding more veggies will make it even more delicious. An extremely common favorite is adding skinned and chopped tomatoes, white onions rather than red onions, cilantro, and diced jalapeo to a chunky mixture of avocado, lime juice, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Plenty of stores have this pico de gallo mix already pre-made, but if you cut your veggies fresh yourself, you'll have more flavour because pre-cut vegetables tend to lose some of their intense flavor while sitting in refrigeration.

Expert Tips

To easily peel your avocados, cut them in vertically. Cut the long part of your knife blade into the pit, twist, and softly remove. Dice the avocado flesh with a butter knife, careful not to chop thru the skin, and remove with a serving spoon. Make sure that you always use an acidic citrus base like lemons or limes to avoid browning. You do not need to mix your guacamole with oil (unless for flavoring) as the avocados are full of enough oils already. No one likes a greasy guacamole!
