A Diet of Super Foods

By Jenny Rye

We have all read or at least heard about the super foods that help fight off cancer, but what you may not realize is that there are more super foods out there that not only fight off cancer but protect, prevent and boost a persons body to a state of being more healthy, and more immune to disease than ever before.

Not all super foods in the past could recruit your taste buds like the super foods of today, take dark green foods for example- a person can only eat so much broccoli or spinach but if you combined these super foods with other super foods you get a burst of nutrition and a delicious meal.

One of my favorite super foods has got to the blue berry. This tiny yet succulent berry has high levels of antioxidants, which have antibiotic effects and combat the damage done by inflammation, these little berries are also know to protect the heart from damage.

Yogurt is a very good source of calcium, protein, and phosphorus. Unlike milk, real yogurt contains good bacteria called probiotics that your digestive systems needs to process other foods you eat. If you want a double whammy of nutrition, try adding blueberries to a vanilla yogurt- yummy!

I love to make sandwiches, and you wouldn't think there's much you can add to a sandwich but let me share some of my favorite add-ons. Avocados in spread form or sliced provide potassium, foliate, and block the absorption of bad fats (cholesterol) in the body. A dash of horseradish on a sandwich is a good source of potassium, vitamin C, calcium, and fights cancer, kill's bacteria and helps your body maintain collagen.

Don't forget the spices when making a salad; with the proper recipe and or ingredients, a salad can be more than a rabbit's food, a salad can actually recruit your taste buds. Ginger, black pepper and cayenne have an aphrodisiac effect and boost metabolism.

A sweet salad could use the benefits of blue berries- which have high levels of antioxidants, ant diabetic effects and combat the damage of inflammation. Cinnamon has a positive effect on blood glucose levels, so adding it to foods can keep you feeling satisfied, this is especially good news when eating allot of salad.

Nothing makes a salad more interesting than adding nuts, unfortunately many nuts are high in fat and calories but if you should add walnuts to your salad not only do they have less fat but this nut contains the most alpha-linolenic omega-3 fatty acids, which lower LDL (bad cholesterol). Walnuts are also a great source of vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants.

Be it salads, pies, or eggnog make sure to add a pinch of nutrition's to each dish and pull out some of the starches such as salad crew tons, heavy creams for the pie and skip the eggnog and enjoy some cider. By eating healthy you will have more energy for the holidays and come January you will not have to make that same old goal of losing weight.
