How To Make Sushi At Home

By Alan Stables

Sushi was once difficult to come by, but now, thanks to high demand, you can even learn how to make sushi at home. Sushi has been around for a long time. It became popular in Japan during the middle ages, popular in the U.S. during the 1970's and is currently enjoyed all across the globe.

Today, sushi can be found at your local grocery store or even at your campus cafeteria. But there was a time when the only possible place where you could eat sushi was a specialty sushi bar or an Asian food store.

Since there are so many potential ingredient combinations to include in a sushi, you may sometimes have a craving for a sushi roll tasting something specific. In that case, learning how to make sushi at home will allow you to create what you want.

You will find that the sushi mold is by far the easiest and fastest way to make sushi although a variety of tools and methods are also available. The plastic sushi molds come in varying shapes and roll your sushi ingredients for you. Such plastic devices are useful for they are easy to use, easy to clean, and, most importantly, mess free.

If your intention is to make sushi without relying on such a device, you will have to learn the art, which is made with a wooden bowl, a wooden spoon, and a bamboo sushi mat. First, you need the sushi roll's main ingredient which is the short grain rice. In addition, sushi requires nori sheets, sweetened rice vinegar, and a selection of your preferred vegetables or fish.

The first step is to cook the rice without overcooking it, since it won't stick together. Then you can put it in the wooden bowl until it cools and is warm. You can then add the sweetened rice vinegar which allows you to make it at your taste, instead of using the special sushi vinegar. Once you have added the vinegar, mix it carefully with the wooden spoon until it becomes sticky and pliable.

Put a sheet of nori seaweed flat on the bamboo mat when the rice mixture is the way you like. You spread a thin layer of the rice mixture onto the mat and place some of your favorite ingredients at the center of the mixture. This becomes the foundation of your sushi roll.

Next, take the mat and gently roll it to form the sushi roll. It takes patience and practice to learn this. Once the sushi is rolled and is firmly held together, slice the sushi roll into rounds and serve with a side of wasabi and pickled ginger. That is how to make sushi at home.
