Cooking A Meal For Your Family

By Carla Turkelton

Traditionally, men would leave their families for work around eight 'o clock. After a long day of work, he could expect dinner to be finished and ready to be served. The meal had been prepared by his wife who spent her days worrying if his shirts had enough starch and whether she should serve peas or corn with the London broil.

That fantasy of the nineteen fifties is long gone, if it ever really existed as we imagine. Husbands and wives work both to provide a more affordable lifestyle for their families. Hard economic times calls for both wives and husbands to work one or more jobs. It is hard to find time for an old fashion family dinner when both parents are working.

It has been said that regular meals with your family have societal as well as health benefits. Children become more rounded and stable with daily family dinners. It is a chance for families to bond and discuss their days.

Family meals are also said to curb obesity, a problem that has raged through society in recent years. In addition to lack of family meals, obesity has many other contributors. With busy schedules, it is hard to fit a home cooked meal in the picture. The stress of their lives encourages the consumption of sweet, salty, and fried foods that are light in nutrition and big on calories.

Long work hours have destroyed the chance to create a full course meal during the week. Off days like Saturday and Sunday are great opportunities for cooking. Try roasting chicken when you don't have to worry about working. Cook enough food to store for leftovers during the week. Then, on a busy week night, you need only heat up the food, make some potatoes and a vegetable and you've got a meal in about a half hour or less.

Fish is also a great choice for a busy family. Most fish can be prepared and cooked in as little as fifteen minutes. Once the fish is in the oven, get started on making some filling, but healthy side dishes. There are a variety of things that can be cooked for family dinners. Construct a plan of attack for cooking dinner every night.
