One of the juiciest parts of a chicken is the chicken wings. It's also certainly one of the best parts to cook on a gas grill. Grilled chicken wings are also much healthier than their fried counterparts mainly because grilling drips fat out of them. That being said, if you have the chance, grilling chicken wings should be done more often than frying them in a pan of oil. It is also certainly more delicious than frying chicken wings. Grilling chicken wings gives you that grilled and smokey flavor that you can never get if you fry them.
First Step: Marinating - The first thing you must do is to take our your chicken wings from the freezer. Make sure its thawed. I usually do this and leave it overnight to thaw. Once you are happy wiht it you can start marinating. Use simple ingredients like salt, pepper and some BBQ marinating sauce. You can even choose to marinate it with some italian herbs. It's really your choice on choosing the marinating ingredients. My tip here is to keep it simple. You don't want too much of flavour that it might just drown the grilled flavour once it's done. You don't have to marinate them too long before grilling unlike other methods of cooking. A good half an hour would suffice.
Second Step: Pre-heating and Grilling - Once you are done marinating, start pre-heating your gas grill to medium to medium-high heat. Take note not to put the temperature too high as it can cause fats to drip down your chicken wings. Fats dripping down can cause flare-ups. Once you are happy with the temperature, you can now start grilling.
Place the chicken wings on the grill and arrange them. Leave a little bit of space in between. Turn the chicken wings every few minutes. It should take you approximately 15-20 minutes to finish grilling your chicken. Keep the grill closed as much as possible to cook your wings faster. You can tell when your chicken wings are cooked by noticing bubbles forming beneath the surface of the skin. The time it takes to get your chicken wings grilled depends on the heat and size of the chicken wings. If you did not choose to coat your chicken wings earlier on then you can start coating it here while it's hot. Do this step before your chicken wing is done. I personally prefer to do it this way as the sauce can easily soak up on the chicken skin.
You can be sure that they are done by looking at their nice brown colour or charred layer. Check to see if it's cooked by cutting it open. Check to see if the meat is pink in colour and also check if clear juices flow out and not blood. Grilled chicken wings should be served well done. Once you are happy with it, serve it on a plate and enjoy!
