By Bill Heath

When it comes to planning parties, one of the biggest expenses is food. But there are several steps you can take in order to cut your party food costs. It is not necessary to purchase expensive appetizers and beverages to throw a great party. A little imagination and effort can make your party a memorable occasion.

To help you save money on food when throwing your next party, here are some ideas and suggestions.

Have a potluck

With potlucks, you can save time and money by having your guests prepare a dish to share with others and it's cheaper than hiring a caterer. Potluck is fun and you will surely end up with an interesting assortment of foods. Suggest what type of dish you want your guests to bring such as dessert or salad to make things simpler.

Finger foods are fun

Relatively inexpensive are chips, dips, and small sandwiches on vegetable trays and you don't need to bring out your best china. Allow your guests to serve themselves from the assortment of bite sized goodies by supplying napkins and small paper plates.

Going back to basics

For casual party foods, fruit and cheese are excellent choices and they don't require dishes or place settings. You may find fresh fruit in season on sale and you can fill your table with nuts, olives, cheese, and crackers.

Try Italian

Spaghetti with salad and garlic bread is a good choice for a dinner party where finger foods are not appropriate or you can have pizza delivered. You can find a bargain on different types of pizza and you'll also save time.

Examples of Thrifty Thirst Quenchers

Easy to store and inexpensive are two-liter soft drinks and bottled water. By providing ice and cups, you can allow your guests to serve themselves. Also cheap are tea, coffee, and lemonade which you can make fresh or from concentrate.

Your party can still be a success without it costing a lot of money. On the foods and beverages you choose, you can look for sales and plan ahead so you can shop around before buying.
