Freshen Up Your Kitchen With These 10 Tricks

By Angela Tyler

Are you bored with your kitchen? You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to give it a little face lift. Just follow these tips and you'll make big changes on a little budget.

1. Paint the walls. Lovely warm and sunshiny colors work perfectly in a kitchen. Start with yellow and add shades of gold, terra cotta, copper, and peach. Work in as many bright colors as possible for a fresh new look and feel.

2. Paint your old cabinets. A few layers of paint using a dry brush will give your cabinet doors a fresh, new look. Try adding accents like pin-stripe tape for automobiles applied under the molding for an attractive accent.

3. Paint the floor. A splash of color and a layer of sealer could give your kitchen a whole new look. Ask your local paint supplier for suggestions for your particular flooring. Whether it's wood, vinyl, or linoleum, there are ways to paint it to make the floor stand out again.

4. Freshen the window treatment. New window curtains or blinds can add a fresh new look to a kitchen. Try painting simple roller shades or installing basswood blinds for a new look. Add fabric, flowers, or anything to bring a bit of color to the kitchen.

5. Use fabric to hide unsightly items. Hang bright fabric over spots you dislike, like a worn dishwasher or open spot under the sink. Stick on some Velcro and gather fabric to coordinate or contrast with the rest of the paint in the kitchen.

6. Use mismatched dishes and cups to decorate. Create a pretty little corner with an interesting shelf and all those cute dishes and cups you have stuck away.

7. Family photos can be decorative. Pretty frames covering the walls can be charming, and the smiling faces add interest to a boring kitchen. Gather your pictures and begin displaying them randomly or in a fun pattern to add a lot of fun.

8. Refresh the counter tops. If possible, remove the old counter tops and find replacements at your local re-store shop. Be creative and ask around about alternatives to expensive tile. If you can't remove your counter tops, consider other methods, like painting and sealing.

9. Give your refrigerator a new look. If your refrigerator has seen its better days, have a local supplier cut chalkboard to fit the front and glue it directly to the surface of your refrigerator. Use pine boards to make a border and you will have your own personal note center right on your refrigerator.

10. Hang or apply mirror tiles. Mirrors can do a lot to brighten a kitchen. Glue mirrors to walls, doors, or cabinets where they can reflect light from the window. If you have a pretty hutch or shelf, place mirrors behind the shelves, then place pretty objects in front and you'll double all your pretty things.

Your kitchen doesn't need to be boring and colorless. You certainly aren't! Using some creativity and a bit of work, choose bright colors and a few tricks to change your kitchen from drab to fun and bright. A bit of paint, fabric, and imagination and your kitchen can shine!
