Basil Pesto Sauce Is A Cook's Best Friend

By Thelma Kent

A lot of dishes tend to need a little something extra. It could be just a bit of color or an extra splash of freshness. Basil pesto sauce is a popular way to get both in one dish. It is quite versatile and delicious with pasta and meats of all types.

It is such a tasty and versatile addition you can use it on pizza and salads. It stands in wonderfully for the standard vinaigrette and adds a pleasant and surprisingly fresh taste to any pizza. You will get the best results when ingredients are used while in season. When it comes to herbs many cooks like to grown their own supply during season and make sauces to store for later use.

Most people use the familiar green herb, but there is one called Opal that has a nice reddish purple color. It can be used when you need a splash of color other than the original and more familiar green. Both of these plants have the distinctive licorice and clove scent and flavor.

This supportive item is most often made in the classical fashion. The traditional recipe contains basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, garlic with salt and pepper to taste. Each cook can tweak the recipe to their own individual wishes by substituting the ingredients as they like. Complimenting cheese and herbs can make a myriad of delightful flavors.

Once you have perfected your own recipe the best way to store it for later use is to put it in the freezer. It can be placed in ice cube molds until frozen, then put into freezer bags for long term storage. Making your favorite dishes will be as simple as warming the bag of frozen cubes in a bowl of warm water.

Basil Pesto Sauce is something all home cooks should learn to perfect. It will compliment any dish you wish to present to family and friends. You will not find a more versatile addition to your recipe repertoire.
