Freezing Coffee?

By Nicholas Lancaster

There are many different suggested ways to store coffee in order to maintain freshness. One of these is to put your coffee beans or ground coffee in the freezer. Is storing coffee in the freezer a good way to maintain freshness? Let's look at the pros and cons.

Frozen foods keep longer, and this was done by people even centuries before. Many types of foods can be frozen. You can freeze meat, bread, fruits, vegetables, and butter. Freezing even maintains many of the vitamins and nutritional value of a wide variety of foods. Freezing coffee isn't such a good idea, though.

Coffee's freshness can be destroyed by air, heat, light, and moisture. At first, freezing doesn't seem to contain many of the offending enemies. But that isn't the case.

Coffee beans are roasted to enhance their flavour. The beans also have pores. A freezer may contain other foods which have odours. The other frozen foods' odours can be absorbed by the coffee beans. Flavoured coffees can be pleasant, but no one wants to drink seafood or garlic flavoured coffee.

Coffee beans also tend to absorb moisture. Coffee beans can deteriorate and lose flavour when that happens. Moisture absorption takes place when you take the coffee out of the freezer and put it back in. If you need to freeze your coffee, then freeze it only once. Coffee will deteriorate every time you take it in and out of the freezer.

Freezing also breaks down the oils in the beans. The oil imparts flavour, too. When the oils are broken down, then the beans lose flavour, and what's coffee without flavour.

All in all, freezing is not an ideal way to store coffee. It's best if you store coffee in a cool, dry place away from light. Freezing coffee is possible, and is best if you only freeze it once. Freezing again and again would affect your coffee's flavour and quality, and you wouldn't want that. Your best bet is to purchase only enough beans or ground coffee to supply you for 1-2 weeks. Enjoy the coffee at its freshest!
