For all beginners out there, the first thing that you must do is clean up the grill. Remove the excess ashes from the previous grills. Use steel wool, brush and hot water to completely eliminate the attached gunk. In this way, there will be enough air flow.

Place a good amount of briquettes on the grill. The ideal amount is enough to cover the entire grill's bottom surface. Overlapping briquettes is okay and again place another stack on top. Make sure that there is enough air vents at the bottom of the grill. Take note that the amount may vary due to various sizes of grill racks.

It is best that you use charcoal briquets because it is more efficient. The advantages of using it as your grilling fuel are numerous. It has long burning time, no poison, high quantity of heat, good to the environment, constant temperature, convenient, and safe to the health. It is made from various types of hardwoods from oak, hickory, nut shells, fruit pits, hard maple, birch, pines and beech.

These wood coals are made from wood char, mineral char, mineral carbon, limestone, starch, borax, sodium nitrate, and sawdust. The wood char, mineral char, and the mineral carbon are used as the heat source. While the limestone is used for uniform visual ashing. The starch is the binder agent and the borax is for press release. And lastly, the sodium nitrate and sawdust are used for ignition aid.

In order to maximize the efficiency, build a good pyramid of charcoals at the center of the grill. Drench good lighter fluid to facilitate the perfect flaming of coals.

Take note that you must start building a fire at the base of the pyramid. Usually it will took you twenty minutes to light the coal and let all the embers smolder. Once the coals are white, better spread them out.
