What are the Wine Characteristics Around the World?

By Amy Norman

Desirable characteristics of fine wines depend on a combination of soil, climate, variety of grape and the methods of cultivation used in the vineyard. In order to produce award-winning wines, wine growers utilize growing methods which are new and proven in order to get the best characteristics.

Some important characteristics that are considered during wine judging include bouquet, acidity, body, crispness and sweetness. Wines from the most advantageous location are usually the ones with the most desirable characteristics.

The wines with the most highly appreciated characteristics come from Italy. The region of Tuscany produces excellent wines, and they're renowned for this. The key to their quality of excellence is a combination of location and ancient culture used to produce the wine.

Excellent wines are also produced in France and they're also known worldwide for their consistency. Champagne, Provence, Bordeaux, and Burgundy are among the few top regions for growing wines in France.

Each region bases its reputation on its own style and quality of their wines. The quality of French wines is determined by the methods of production used to ensure the quality characteristics that have made French wines distinguishable from others.

Because of countries investing highly in the study of aspects of wine making such as growing and bottling, there's a surge in production of quality wines in countries like the USA, Australia, and Argentina.

While judging the desirable characteristics of wine is complex and confusing, most wine aficionados agree that the variety of the grape is a key factor. Considered to be a positive characteristic is the flavor of the grape used in a specific wine and it's labeled as "varietal character" by the wine judges.

In describing the characteristics of wines, an entire language of wine is used. It helps wine growers, wine lovers, and judges communicate with each other although when heard for the first time it seems to have a poetic quality about it.

Words that are elementary to a wine enthusiast includes aromatic, robust, and full-bodied. When it comes to discovering various wine characteristics, the fun is in sampling wines from around the world and see if you're able to match the characteristics.
