The Versatile Basil Pesto Sauce Can Be Used For Nearly Anything

By Jana Porter

Many homes enjoy the versatility which basil pesto sauce offers. This flavorful creation can be paired with nearly any dish such as fish, chicken, pasta, and many others. The health benefits the fresh herbs in this sauce make it an added reason to have a recipe handy for use.

The ingredients include fresh basil and garlic, as well as olive oil, pine nuts, with salt and pepper to taste. These are the basics, the recipe can be altered to suit the taste of the family or the dish that it is being used with. One key factor is that the herbs must always be fresh to obtain the best results, dried herbs do not work well.

The leafy herb that provides the signature rich aroma and flavor must be done in a special way to reap the fullest benefits. The herb must be pounded or bruised, as the pesto name indicates. The best way to achieve this is with the use of a mortar and pestle. There are a number of people who choose to use a blender or processor, but the results decimate the leaf and does not produce as good a flavor.

Since the recipe requires the use of fresh herbs, the option is to freeze it. To accomplish this, it is important not to add the cheese prior to freezing because cheese does not freeze well. Instead, place it into ice cube holders prior to adding cheese, let it freeze then place into freezer bags. When ready to be used, place the cheese into the dish at that time.

The simple recipe can easily be changed to add or replace ingredients. Instead of the usual pine nuts, try walnuts instead. To develop a richer flavor, replace the standard Parmesan cheese for Romano. Experiment with changing the ingredients to create a flavor to match the meal.

Every household can enjoy basil pesto sauce. It freezes well, which makes it an excellent dish year round. The healthy effects of this recipe are evident in the herbs used as the basic ingredient. Read more about: Basil Pesto Sauce
