Points To Keep In Your Mind When Decorating Your Very First Cakes

By Caroline Dashurst

If you're new to baking, there a few things which you might find beneficial when decorating your first cakes which will give you something you will be proud to offer others. Regardless of whether you're making it for a party or just for fun, listed here are some tips you should keep in mind.

The initial point is to use ingredients which are room temperature when making your cake as well as when decorating it. Some things need to be kept in the fridge, but bear in mind to take them out no less than half an hour before you need to use them. You may discover items significantly simpler to work with if they are at the same temperature.

On a similar note, make certain your cake has cooled totally so it too is at room temperature. In the event you do not let it cool entirely, it'll begin to melt any icing you attempt to put on it. You might even see it begin to slip off!

You can find a couple of exceptions to this rule. When placing multiple layers of icing on (e.g. as one often does with a ganache), you may discover that refrigerating it for half an hour in between frostings will provide you with a smoother covering.

Taking it one step in the other direction, you will get a really glossy, professional finish to your frosting in the event you melt the finished article a bit using a hair dryer. Don't put the dryer on full heat and right up to the cake though, as of course you may melt it too much! You'll also find it beneficial to heat the knife before cutting your cake as it will not 'drag' the icing when cutting.

In case you are nervous of using a frosting or royal icing, attempt fondant icing initially as you are able to buy this ready-made and also ready rolled. This can be just lifted over the cake and smoothed down the edges. Brush a little warm apricot jam on the cake initially as this may help it stick. Roll out any remaining fondant you have left and cut some patterns with cutters to use on the top. Just dab a bit water on the bottom to fix them. If you are artistic, you'll be able to mold figures to sit on top also. Putting a cocktail stick inside the figure and then into the cake holds it secure but don't make your figures out of proportion for the cake.

With these ideas, you'll be able to make the perfect cake. Folks will not believe that you created it your self if they've never seen your creations before.
