Get A Healthy Plate On the Table for Dinner Tonight

By Amy Roskelley

Feeding your kids healthy food is much easier to do at home, than if you were to take them to a restaurant. However, dinner time can be such a struggle for most families. In fact, a home cooked supper doesn't happen at all for some families. With both parents working, kids in all sorts of sports, food getting more and more expensive, and families just down right busy, it's easier to eat out. If instead you take the time to prepare some healthy food to eat at home, your kids will be healthier and happier. In addition, it's been shown through research that families who eat at home together are closer and the kids are less likely to use drugs and alcohol.

Most nights of the week, it is possible to build a A healthy plate for kids at home! A few ideas that make it work for us are:

Use a Crock-Pot! A slow cooker, or Crock-Pot can make any time constraints possible. Getting food into the pot in the morning, and having a meal ready by dinner is the ultimate in ease and efficiency.

Create a menu plan. Whether you plan out breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or just dinner, having a plan helps to get a meal on the table in minutes.

Get things ready in the morning, so it can be assembled in the evening. Whether you thaw some meat, or chop some vegetables, getting the tedious tasks out of the way can make it possible to get dinner ready on time.

Get the kids help in preparing meals. It's a great opportunity to teach them skills, connect with them, talk with them, and they are more likely to eat the dinner they've helped prepare.

Don't complicate things. Dinner doesn't have to be complicated! Keep it simple. Whether you decide on waffles, or grilled chicken, dinner shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to prepare.

Commit today to get a healthy meal on the table for your family. They will be healthier and your dinner will taste better than fast food.
