Is It Really Safe To Buy Seafood Online

By Martina Angely

Are you a seafood lover - crab, lobster, scallops, shrimp? Does the thought of a mouth-watering tuna steak or a tender fillet of trout instantly make you hungry? Seafood is really a wonderful treat not to mention nutritious as well. One of the best things about so many types of seafood is just how easy it is to prepare. There are countless delicious recipes both in cookbooks and online. Honestly, the biggest barrier many people face is actually obtaining high quality fish and seafood to begin with.

## I tried making seafood dishes on my own a few years ago but they were never as good as the dishes at a restaurant.

The main explanation for that is freshness, pure and simple. The best tasting fish and seafood is the freshest. There is no way around that. Seafood that has been frozen even once just does not taste as good as fresh seafood. The challenge of course is that unless you have an excellent fish market that you use it's challenging to get ahold of genuinely fresh product.

## The fish market I used to go to closed down a few years back and the stuff I've found at the supermarket since is not as good.

What good seafood stores and fine restaurants have in common are fast reliable suppliers that deliver the product as quickly as possible. Typically any piece of fish you find at a grocery store has been out of the water for at least six days.

## I've heard that people can shop for seafood via the internet these days. Is that really such a great idea?

Like fish markets and restaurants, not all online seafood sites are created equally. If you want to buy seafood online there are a few things you can look at when trying to assess an online site. Firstly, what kind of guarantees do they offer? Second, how quickly is the product shipped? And finally, where is the order being shipped from. This last point is particularly important. Some sites are shipping seafood from a warehouse and if the warehouse is simply sourcing their product from other suppliers you are looking at nothing more than another step between you and the water - and with that more delays.

## Precisely how quickly should I expect to be getting my fish and seafood if I decide to purchase online?

Optimally you should find a website which enables the fishermen themselves to pack your order for shipping so that you can get it the nect day. Once you have started enjoying fish that is less than 48 hours from the sea you'll never consider compromise again.

Let's say you have a book of fantastic lobster recipes. You can go online and with a little research have live lobsters shipped straight to your home. Lobster prices will of course vary according to species and season but the taste of live lobster fresh from the ocean (as opposed to a tank) is beyond compare. Enjoy seafood at home from a good online source and never eat supermarket fish again.
