The Way to Make a Straightforward Chocolate Cake

By Yves Casson

A couple of nights ago I had a dream in which I was walking down the aisles of my supermarket - the baking aisles, to be precise, and I was picking out the most decadent cake ingredients: cherries, dried berries, caramel frosting, white chocolate flakes and everything else in between. This is what occurs when you nod off to sleep while watching cake baking shows, I guess. Anyway, I awoke and realized it was my day off so I made a decision, "Why not make this dream come true?" Well, the first concern is that I'm really a guy who just doesn't know his way around the kitchen at all when it comes to baking; but instead of leaving my crushed dreams laying there on the floor, I decided to meet them half way and see whether or not I could find a plain chocolate cake recipe. That sounds easy enough, don't you think?

A mate of mine suggested I try out the chocolate cake recipe that I am about to share with you. She told me it was so simple that even I could pull it off - thanks, very inspiring. In any case, I already had all the ingredients for this plain chocolate cake recipe. If a bachelor has this stuff, then chances are you do too.

Ingredients for this chocolate cake recipe:

- Two (2) cups of granular sugar

- Three (3) cups of all-purpose flour

- One teaspoon of salt

- Third of a cup of cocoa powder

- 2 tsp of baking powder

- One (1) tsp. of liquid vanilla

- Two (2) tbsp. of vinegar

- 3/4 cup of vegetable oil

- Two cups of cold water

Preparation instructions:

1. First, preheat your oven to 350F.

2. Mix all the dry ingredients together (sugar, flour, salt, cocoa powder and baking powder).

3. Mix the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl.

4. Blend together the contents of each bowl.

5. Pour this mix into a baking pan.

6. Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven.

The best part of this recipe was how fast and simple the preparation was. I had envisaged more of a kitchen catastrophe by the end....Apocalypse Kitchen Now!

Fortunately the kitchen was spotless and the cake was utterly mouth-watering. Plus, I had plenty leftover for when guests pop in.

Another trick I've discovered is that the cake can be re-heated in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds, based on the rating of your microwave. Once heated, drop a spoonful of either cream or ice cream and enjoy.

There you have it! A good, old-fashioned recipe that's a 'piece of cake' to prepare!
