Crispy Southern Cheese Straws

By Kathy Smith

Today, cheese straw recipes can be hard to find. Cheese straws are believed to have originated the South in the 1800s by frugal aspiring cooks. Some of these chefs combined remaining biscuit dough along with some cheddar cheese.

The mixture was then simply designed it in to lengthy, narrow pieces that fit anywhere between all of the lines of biscuits on top of baking sheets. And then the biscuits and cheese straws ended up cooked along with one another within the cook's oven.

As opposed to the biscuits, that were served and eaten with other dishes, the cheese straws rarely were eaten anywhere other than the kitchen and would be consumed solely as goodies at snack time.

In the present day, cheese straws may be offered with cocktails or sometimes they may be offered as an accompaniment to foods. Inventive culinary experts could certainly serve them on top of salads in exchange of using croutons or simply next to soups as opposed to the familiar saltines. These are definitely best ways to include old-fashioned, flavorsome and also creative tasty recipes into your typical dinners.

The following cheese straw recipe is my own great grandmother's. She possessed an oldtime seashore shack on the Carolina sea-coast and then the whole family group of aunts, uncles, cousins, moms, and toddlers compiled there each summertime. My personal great nanna baked huge amounts of the aforementioned cheese straws and served them on a garden picnic family table.

two 2/3 cups sifted flour
Sprinkle of red pepper
1/3 tsp salt
1 cup soft, unsalted butter
two cups grated sharp cheddar cheese

Preheat your oven to 275. Blend your flour, red pepper along with salt in a bowl. Put in your butter and thus stir up until the numerous flour lumps are gone for good.

Following that, add in your grated cheese and mix until it's evenly along with the flour combo. Roll the flour and cheese dough into a " firm rectangular shape and cool within the fridge for one hour or so or maybe in your freezer for 30 mins if you are short on time. If you do put it in the freezer, just be sure not to leave it in for more than 30 minutes, otherwise the dough will freeze and when it de-frosts, it could become wet and sticky.

Then simply, begin using a cutting knife to make straight into " dense pieces. Place strips upon a slightly greased pan and bake inside the oven approximately 15-18 minutes or right until golden dark brown.
