A Brief History of Apple Crumble

By Dave Brown

I live for food and I love preparing and taking time master recipes. My favourite food is apple crumble and I have created a website dedicated it and all things crumble. The time to eat apple crumble after you have eaten a big roast on a cold Sunday afternoon, you've been for a long walk in the cold and you know that waiting for you after your dinner is the perfect pudding.

The next trickiest thing to work out is what to have with your crumble? Ice Cream? Custard? My mum always uses Birds Custard from a tin, I've always liked this but sometimes its runny sometimes stiff. I quite like ambrosia which I have newly discovered so I would recommend giving both a try.

Now did you know that apple crumble was first created back in the Second World War? It was used as strict rationing was brought in. The normal ingredients used in a pie weren't available; these included flour sugar and fat! So people used a simple mixture of margarine, sugar and flour.

Anyway, back to me and the food I love. There are many different type of crumble out there. Raspberry and Pear crumble, Rhubarb crumble to mention just a couple. There is always the issue of what to have with them and how to make them taste a little different.

I find that vanilla ice cream is perfect with Rhubarb crumble but the crumble has to be hot. If you let it cool too much you won't get the lovely melted ice cream mixed in with the rhubarb. I must figure out why you get that film on your teeth after eating rhubarb!

So, that's the story of apple crumble. I hope you have learnt something new - who would have thought desserts could be so interesting. If you would like to view a lovely apple crumble recipe follow the link below.
