A Product History Of The Gas-Powered Oven

By Fabian Verzini

The gas oven was first introduced in the mid 1800's in response to a demand for smaller models to be used in the home. Until this time, the gas ovens available were large scale for industrial use. Since then, many changes have been made to the original models. It is popular for firing pizzas and heating up stone cookware.

The old version has a gas pilot that is constantly burning the gas flame under the cook top. When the stove is turned on, the flame lights the gas flowing to the burners. The drawback is that the pilot is always consuming fuel even when the oven is not in use.

All the new models use electric sparks to ignite the appliance. The electric ignition system saves on fuel because it is not always burning like the pilot light. Once lighted, the flames on both versions should burn blue. If it is yellow, it is not getting the right mix of gas and air and needs cleaning by a professional or the owner.

Some versions have one compartment where all the baking or grilling is done. On others there will be two compartments. One for baking only and the other utilized for all other cooking needs.

These new gas appliances will save money over time. They will last for over twenty years and are fuel efficient. Their efficiency is due to the gas arriving at the home without being converted from some other source or fossil fuel.

Cooking on gas does introduce some dangerous byproducts into the home. These are carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and nitrogen-dioxide. For this reason proper ventilation above the appliance should be installed and in good working order.

When an individual decides to shop for a gas oven, they should keep a few things in mind. How much space do they have in the kitchen for the appliance? How much can they spend? Do they want double or single compartments and does it come with a warranty?
