Let's Make A Stuffed Pizza Crust!

By A J Adams

Is there a food item more popular right now than stuffed pizza crust pizza? You see the ads all over the place.

Stuffed pizza crusts have created quite a boost in sales at pizza restaurants too. This new product has stirred a hungry crowd into action. It has also allowed these stores to raise prices based on the new concept.

For this reason and to actually introduce you to a better pie, we'll tackle making a stuffed pizza crust at home. It'll cost you much less and taste a lot better. Plus you can make it any way you like.

Most crust recipes have very similar simple ingredients, all-purpose flour, water, oil and yeast. To do it right, simply get the quantities from a generic dough recipe off the Internet.

Measure out the flour and pour it onto a cutting board. Make a mound, then make a hollow well in the center of it about 6" in diameter. Pour the warm water into it with the yeast added. Stir it for a couple of minutes. You will see the water turn cloudy then a slight foam will form. This lets you know the yeast has been activated. Finally, add your oil.

Next start pulling the flour from the edges into the wet mixture. Do this carefully so as not to break the "dam" of flour. Continue this until the mixture is quite thick, then pull all the flour into the mass. Keep folding it into itself until a ball of stuffed pizza crust dough forms.

Add a little flour to the dough ball as you begin to knead it. It will try to stick to you and the cutting board if you don't. Knead for 5 minutes or so until the stuffed pizza crust dough is shiny and resilient to the touch.

Put the stuffed pizza crust dough ball in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let sit in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours to expand and rise.

Most dough recipes make enough for one very large pizza or two smaller ones. Depending on your needs you can cut the dough in half and freeze the other half or make one big pizza with all the dough.

Roll it out until it's about 1/8" thick. Starting about 1-1 1/2" in from the edge, starting placing cheese sticks or grated cheese in a narrow row all around the outside edge of the pizza.

You will now seal in the cheese by folding the dough outside the row, over the row itself. Press it down to form the seal. Go all the way around the pizza until all the cheese has been covered and sealed.

You know something? Your first stuffed pizza crust pie shell is done! All you need to do now is load it with your favorite toppings and throw it into a hot oven! Get ready for a delicious pie!
