How To Make Pizza Crust At Home

By Art Damico

Want to know how to make pizza crust at home? It's really easy. Follow me.

If you don't have one already, get a simple dough recipe off the Internet. As long as it calls for flour, water, salt, oil and yeast as ingredients, you're covered. That's the basic five things you need.

Before we start, we should mention a good cooking habit to get into. Measure out and assemble all your recipe ingredients before you start. That way the whole mixing procedure can go very quickly and without stopping.

Mix together all your dry ingredients first before adding liquid. Put the salt, yeast and flour into a bowl and stir them well, then add the water. The water should be lukewarm and optimally around 105 degrees for good yeast fermentation.

A wooden spoon or other heavy utensil should be used to stir the ingredients at this point. It takes a lot of effort to combine the dough at this stage. Add the oil last and stir until everything is combined.

It's a good idea to go ahead and measure out a small amount of flour at this point and put it near your work area. It will be needed soon to prevent the dough from sticking to everything including you. Put the dough on a floured board or counter top and get ready to knead.

Kneading is simple, repetitive procedure required to work up the gluten in the flour. If you just follow a method of pushing down on the dough while pushing it away from you at the same time you'll have no trouble getting the results you want. Fold the dough back over itself after each knead stroke and rotate it 90 degrees, then push down and away again. After 5 minutes, you should begin to notice the dough getting very smooth and elastic. This is your sign that it's ready.

Now place the dough ball into an oiled bowl and roll it around to coat with the oil. Cover with plastic wrap and set it in a warm place for about two hours. When it doubles in size it's ready to work some more.

Place the dough on a flour-dusted surface. Using your hands, press the dough into the basic shape you'll be needing and begin rolling with the rolling pin. Making smooth passes, work it down until you get the thickness you want for your pizza crust.

When done, carefully pick it up and place it in your baking pan. You can now trim the dough where needed to fit your pan. Form an edge around the lip of the pizza if you like. Some people like this, others don't. It's your pizza, do what you want.

Remember a short time ago when you asked how to make pizza crust? Now you know! You just did it!
