A Quick Look At The History Of Chocolate

By Margaret Burgess

It's been generations already, in fact thousands of years, but chocolate has long been a popular food. From the very first days when people would brew chocolate drink straight from the cacao seeds to the present day where we can choose countless of varieties of chocolates, this food has come a long way.

Once chocolate was discovered by European conquests, it became a treat only the wealthiest could afford. Aside from the steep cost, it was also quite bitter. Sure, it was possible to use sugar or spice to add flavoring, but this too was considered a luxury in those days. Common people would begin enjoying chocolate at a price they can afford in the 19th century, the dawn of mass production.

When the candy bar was introduced, chocolate candy became even bigger than ever. It took its place proudly on the general store shelf next to the gum drop, hard candy and candy cane bins of the day. Boy, isn't it amazing how chocolate has advanced in these past few generations? These days you can even choose different flavors for chocolate candy, and the shapes and ingredients they come in are innumerable. Some ingredients such as nuts and fruits are complimentary to the flavor and texture of the chocolate and left whole or diced inside the candy bar. Think of chocolate as a beautiful symphony where the different flavorings are like instruments that can enhance the melody of taste that melts in your mouth. In fact, chocolate candy can remind some people of a beautiful story. Why, you can even taste chocolate and tell where in the world each ingredient originated. Ah, nothing like touring the world with a choc'lit bar!

Not only that, chocolate complements other guilt-inducing sweet treats like ice cream, as a candy coating, or can be eaten inside its own candy coating.

It is now common to buy candy on the Internet. With the invention of the World Wide Web, you can snack on exotic chocolate candy delicacies made anywhere in the world. And shipping is so advanced these days you can expect to get your chocolate candy in immaculate condition.

There is also a wide variety of chocolate molds and candy making accessories for you to try your hand at making your own chocolate candy. It's a fun way to get children involved in the kitchen and also a great way to make personalized gifts. With all the ingredients and flavorings to choose from, you can go nuts in the kitchen - not literally, of course, unless you're mixing nuts in your chocolate. A lot of very successful candy companies started this way, as a hobby in a home kitchen.

Isn't it wonderfully wishful thinking to imagine some random John Q. Public from Anywhere, USA or maybe somebody else from around the world - a chocolate lover, by any other name, logging on to the 'net and buying your own creations on your own website!
