Without a shadow of a doubt, the most common New Year's resolution in the West is to lose weight. However, it is also the first New Year's resolution most apt to be broken! Losing weight is not difficult in theory, but practice is oh, so different. This is because it involves lifestyle changes.

Our bodies change as we get older and typically our level of activity decreases too. Maybe, we get an office job with a promotion, whereas we used to work 'in the field'. But people in general, do not adjust their diet to match their variation in circumstances. We sit behind our desks or in retirement and think we can still eat and drink like we did twenty years ago. Big mistake!

Fortunately, there are dozens of diets on hand to help us attain our weight loss goals. There are the traditional calorie counting diets, as advocated by Weight Watchers; there are the 'new era' diets like Atkins, which have us counting carbohydrates and there are no end of fad diets which are frankly not worth wasting time talking about.

The choice of which diet you would like to follow is all yours, of course, but it is well worth examining the main types of diet to see which one will suit you. Then you must determine whether you will require the help and encouragement of a weekly visit to a club or not, or whether you can get that camaraderie from an online club of slimmers, where you talk to fellow slimmers in the club forum online.

It is also worth fixing in your mind, why you want to diet. Is it to look better? Or to feel more comfortable in yourself? Or is it for health reasons? Or all three? Have a think about your reasons and let them motivate you. Whenever, you feel like packing it all in, remember your motivation. Get a book and journal your progress, but first write your motivation in bold capitals on the front page or cover. Keep it in front of you and read it out loud to yourself every day.

Consult some of the slimming sites online and work out a few key metrics like the average weight people are for your height, sex and body type and your BMI or body mass index. Write these figures on the first page of your book too and use them as the ultimate goals.

You could create a graph and plot your weekly weight to see how you are doing. Set realistic goals and targets. You can get loads of free information from the Weight Watchers and Atkins websites or / and visit your doctor for advice and leaflets.

Aim to shed something like 10-20 pounds in the first month and eight to ten per month after that. Go slowly and aim to go slowly, because then you will hit your targets and you won't feel like giving up. When you get within five to ten pounds of your target weight, assuming that you have lost a lot of weight, rein back a little and allow yourself a little more freedom. Drop your target to one pound a week, so that you will get a feel for 'eating normally'.

The dreaded exercise; you have to face it, you will need to do more exercise, but two times thirty minute walks a day is ordinarily enough. You could swim once a week too or get an exercise machine, if you are tied to the house by family.

No one needs to read a study or a report to know that there are a lot of overweight or obese people in the USA and the UK. You can blame this on the food being sold or a lack of understanding, but the real bottom line is that you are the one who is putting that stuff into your mouth.

Most people do not think about it, but everyone has a choice whether to eat decent food or not. If you are seriously overweight, then you chose to allow yourself to get yourself into that state. No one else, you!

Nevertheless, there is always a way out and it is never too late. There are thousands of weight loss programs, so you should be able to find one that suits you. I made that sound easy and it should be, but people still have trouble choosing one.

My advice is to read the weight loss advert aloud to yourself or a friend. Does it sound like BS? Then it probably is. Dump it. The bottom line is that you can only lose weight by expending more energy than you consume. Having said that there are a couple of ways of achieving that.

The two basic methods are either counting calories or counting carbohydrates, that is Weight Watchers or Atkins. Start by going to their web sites and reading about their philosophies. Choose the one that suits you and stick to it.

One note that I would like to stress here for teens is that at your time of life your body is going through a radical change. You are metamorphosing from a child to an adult and your body is filling up with hormones, you only had a little of before.

Let the change finish, before you start worrying too much. You were a bug, now you are a chrysalis and soon you will be a butterfly. Just wait and your body time to sort itself out.

There really is not much you can do to stop what your body has to do. Spots mean that you have poisons in you and your body wants to get rid of them. Help it by not putting any more junk into it. Keep your skin clean and make sure that everything that touches your skin is clean too. Hands, hair, pillow cases, et cetera.

Exercise! Now is the time to embed an exercise routine into your way of life. Exercise raises your rate of metabolism which helps you burn calories more quickly. If you can burn calories quickly, then you can allow yourself more treats.

The other point about exercise is that if you do not establish a discipline for exercise when you are young, then you will find it harder when you have your next bodily change in your forties or fifties.

The bottom line is not to worry too much about what you look like now, you are a chrysalis. Help your body out by eating healthily and take up a sport you enjoy and stick to it.

Spread the icing or frosting on the cakes. You can also use pre-made fondant. This does not have to be in plain color. Add food coloring to give it some color before spreading it on the cupcakes. Then take your decorations and stick them onto the icing. They stick very well on butter cream icing. Now your cupcakes are ready to show off to your friends!

As you perfect the art of cake decoration, you can slowly incorporate more complex shapes, such as fondant flowers - daffodils, mushrooms and sunflowers among others. Some more cupcake decorating ideas you can try out include falling flowers where you shape a stalk and petal and place it on the cupcake top, so that the stalk lies on the icing and the petal falls to the side. Cover the top with more petals in different colors. You can also paint the faces and names of your guests on the cupcakes. There is nothing like the gathering of families during the spring and summer months for a BBQ or cook-out.

The table is always set out with many side-dishes like potato salad, chips, cookies, pies, macaroni and cheese and any other popular sides that your family cooks. Although, if you are on a budget, then it can be expensive trying to cover costs of meat, drinks, plates and silverware, desserts and all of the side-dishes. Since the entire family is coming, everybody can help pay or bring assigned items for the cook-out.

When you are planning your cook-out, think about the types of side-dishes that your family makes or you would like to see at the table. Write down everything on a piece of paper and suggest names next to the items. Make phone calls or send invites asking people to call and tell you what they are bringing. Or like most families, sometimes everybody has their own "specialty" that the family knows them for. If your grandma makes everyone's favorite potato salad, then let her bring it. Busy working mothers and fathers can be responsible for bringing bags of potato chips, plates or even soda. This way, they won't feel pressured to have to cook something at the last minute.

If you still feel that purchasing all of the meat is expensive, ask everybody to bring a package of hamburger, chicken or pork-chops. Or perhaps, have some of those bring what they would like to eat, and then the "chef" will prepare it for them. Meat can be expensive-especially when fuel prices are high-or if a person's hours have been cut-or worse-laid off from a job. The idea is to make the cook-out fun and special. It should not stress families out if they do not have the money to help buy food or drinks for the cook-out. For those who find their budgets tight, ask that they come over to help set up and decorate, or stay later for clean-up.

Once the cook-off is going on-or even after it's over, leave out a "donation bowl." This can cover the cost of another cook-out. Decide when the best time is for everyone to gather again, and stash the funds in the "donation bowl" somewhere in a safe place for next time. This will help cut the cost of any money that family members will need to spend at the next cook-out. With all of the help from members of your family, planning the budget for a cook-out should never be stressful again.

Cookies and brownies can be dense. They need the same binding, though eggs help with that. If you make a trail mix cookie, for example, you want a bit of crunch too, so a rice or corn flour with its crunchy texture goes very well with nuts and coconut.

When mixing batter for muffins, consider some of the options that give you a fine finished quality that does not fall flat. For one thing, mix baking powder with plain yogurt before adding these to the wet ingredients. They will bubble, and those bubbles give lift to your baking. Another option is to curdle milk by added a teaspoon of lemon juice and then adding your baking powder. Combine as you would in any recipe, with sugars, oil and eggs.

Combine dry ingredients including xanthum or guar gum, salt and sugars, spices and so on. Cocoa makes a great addition to your product because it is naturally gluten-free and light when sifted-in up to about 1/3 cup per twelve muffins. For a healthier muffin also use oat bran (not wheat bran), a few oats and then your alternative flour. All of these reduce the impact of dense, chewy or coarse flours to the final product. Be sure your batter sits for a few minutes before baking so the wet can sink into dry components.

There was a time, say thirty or forty years ago, when vegetarians had a difficult time telling non-vegetarians why it was so important to stop eating meat. The situation was made worse because vegetarians back then did not get the support from the food manufacturers and supermarkets that they do now either. In brief, it was far more difficult to be a vegetarian than it is now.

Moreover, in those far off days, lots of hippies and others following an 'alternative' lifestyle were first generation vegetarians and so they could not look to their parents for support and advice. Those individuals are now in their forties and fifties with children and even grandchildren of their own, many of whom are also vegetarian.

Being second or even third generation vegetarian is quite different from being first, not least because they have been able to see the effects of a vegetarian lifestyle on their parents and even grandparents. It might never cross such a person's mind to crave a bacon sandwich with tomato sauce or a French dip beef sandwich au jus, because the thought is abhorrent to them.

They have not had to take a conscious decision or a vast physical effort to cut meat from their diet after perhaps eating it for twenty years or more. My father gave up meat for ethical as well as practical reasons when he was sixty and he craved 'bacon butties' (sandwiches) for the rest of his life. He found it difficult.

His reasons for giving up meat were pretty typical: he objected to the callousness to animals that is brought about by intensive farming techniques in some countries; he objected to the use of hormones and preservatives in live animals and he believed that eating so much meat was not a sustainable lifestyle for a growing world populace, that was growing increasingly rich enough that everybody would would like to eat more meat sooner or later.

Society does not help or encourage the would-be vegetarian. The farming industry has grown huge and they have a vested interest in selling us their dairy, meat and eggs. It is hard to escape pictures and hoardings marketing their products. Although the situation is better these days, restaurants still cater usually to the meat-eaters and vegetarian meals always appear small and expensive by comparison.

Luckily there are plenty of 'Eastern' restaurants that cater naturally to the vegetarian because numerous Easterners are vegetarian. You can always find vegetarian meals on a Chinese, Japanese or an Indian menu. Hindus are vegetarian. Thai restaurants will also have a high proportion of meatless meals.

However, if you do not like spicy food, you are back in the pizza hut or the sandwich bar in most towns. Society has moved on, but there is still a long way to go yet the vegetarian life is definitely becoming easier to sustain. There is support in numbers, so it would be worth taking vegetarian cookery lessons if your resolve begins to waiver.

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Readings

If you have reason to be worried about your blood pressure, you ought to begin monitoring it yourself at home. The third stage is called 'Hypertension Stage One' and is reflected by figures between prehypertension and 160/100. If you get into this stage then you really have to see your physician and he will recommend significant changes to your lifestyle along the lines stated above or / and he will put you on tablets.

The fourth stage is called 'Hypertension Stage Two' and is anything above 160/100. This is quite dangerous and your physician will want to get you to make radical alterations to your lifestyle and / or take medication which could be for the rest of your life. If you reach this stage get to your physician's as soon as you can.

When you are talking about your blood pressure with your doctor, make certain you tell him about any other medication you are taking, because some medication will raise blood pressure too. Examples of medication that can raise your blood pressure are: anti-depressants, oral contraceptives and anti-flu or anti-cough medications.

There are other things that can affect blood pressure too. lack of sleep is one. Do you have a new-born baby, a sick child, money problems, sleep apnoea or a snoring spouse that inhibit you from sleeping properly?

Fear, anger and anxiety are also reasons for high blood pressure. So is constipation, drinking too much and smoking. So, before you let your medical doctor prescribe medication to reduce your blood pressure, be sure he is aware of all your circumstances.
