The Greatest Myths About Cooking

By Michael Weisenberg

Spice up your Cooking

Most food doesn't taste very good if you just cook it plain and don't try to think of other ways to add flavor. Two of the most common ways to add great flavor to your meal are spices and herbs. While some dishes can't be saved no matter what you add, herbs are a good way to try and make the dish taste better. Fresh herbs and dry herbs are both available options when you go grocery shopping. All herbs taste good, but fresh herbs have an extra kick not present in their dry counterparts. Dry herbs have a lot more flavor is small amounts than fresh herbs do because of how the are processed.

To make up for the concentration in fresh herbs, use 4 times the normal amount when cooking. The best way to get all of the flavor out of fresh herbs and spices is to make sure you cut them up. Even though fresh herbs and spices are the best way to get flavor, you won't always have them around when cooking. The reason why dried spices and herbs have become so popular is because they are always ready when you want to cook. Fresh ingredients may have a lot more flavor, but dried herbs and spices are more concentrated so you can more sparingly apply them.

While most herbs and spices are good when they are dry, parsley and cilantro provide no taste when they are dry. Fortunately, most recipes tell you to buy fresh leaves when you are cooking with either cilantro or parsley. Amazing flavor in food is hard to come by so you have to use the right amount of spices and herbs. When cooking with around a pound of food, try to use around a quarter teaspoon of flavoring to get the best results. This is only a common rule of thumb so be sure not to use it for every spice and herb out there. Not many people know how there taste buds will respond to all the flavor so it is important to start with a small amount of spices.

Another factor to consider is when you add in your flavoring while your food is cooking. Fresh herbs and spices should be added later as opposed to dried herbs and spices which should be added sooner when cooking. Trying out new food to use your spices on is a great idea and meat is where you should start. While spices have a lot of flavor, so does meat which makes it great to experiment with. After you create your perfect blend of herbs and spices to make delicious food you will be a master of flavor. Nothing is more satisfying than flavoring your food the perfect amount.
