How To Start Making Fondant Cake

By Melany Morrison

Fondants on cakes is not meant only for wedding cakes, it can be used for all types of cakes and all occasions where cake is called for, it can be for wedding cakes, bridal showers, birthdays, and other celebration where cakes are appropriate. This is the reason why fondant is unique in its presentation and get to the fancy of a lot of people.

Fondant cake will expose the art and beauty of any special occasion. Making fondant makes you feel like an artist since you can decide what it turns out to be in shape, size and color. To get this beautiful art work done you need to have a good non sticky work surface which will help you roll your dough without it tearing or being frayed.

After the cake fondant has been prepared another tasking moment is rolling it on the cake. To start with prepare the cake by lightly covering it with butter cream icing.

Before you will roll out the fondant, you need to knead it until it is of a workable consistency. To avoid the fondant sticking, it is advisable to slightly dust your work surface or your rolling pin and your roll and cut mat with a little amount of confectioner's sugar. Apparently roll out a fondant which is exactly the size of your cake. Consequently, to keep the fondant from sticking, lift and move as you roll. Add more confectioner's sugar if needed. Gently lift fondant for cake over rolling pin or slip cake circle under fondant to move i.e. position on cake. When using the easy-glide smoother, shape the fondant into sides of cake. This procedure is advisable because using your fingers will leave impressions on the fondant.

When you are done with your kneading and coloring the next thing you want to do with your dough for fondant is to cut it to suit what you have in mind for its application on your cake. To achieve this you need a fondant cutter which can either be a plastic cutter or metal steel, which ever suits you are good enough for you as long as you can manipulate and get around it to get your desired shapes for your cake. These cutters can be used to make ribbons, fondant rice, spaghetti and grass. The ribbons can be used to dress the sometimes tacky bottom of a cake and using either water or royal icing as a form of glue. Also fondant ribbons can be used to remove the wrinkles on your cake.

One challenge of fondant for cakes is storage because if your fondant is not stored properly it can dry out fast and will lose its beauty. It is therefore necessary to store it in an air-tight container. Here it can be stored for more than seven days, but like other foods it is best used fresh and therefore is preferably used within a week of preparation.

To many people, covering a cake in fondant icing is scary and is mostly avoided. However it has a beautiful satin finish that is desired by many brides. It is easy to add flavor or tint white fondant just about any color you want.
