Wine Decanters: Learning The Difference

By Celia Hall

With many different wines and liquors, decanting accents the taste. The process simply involves pouring the liquid from its original bottle into another one. This allows more air to flow through the liquor, adding to the taste, and it also prevents sediment from transferring into the new bottle. There are different factors that will influence the types of wine decanters you choose.

First, you must decide what material you desire. A decanter is generally available in crystal or plain glass. Glass ones, on the other hand, are less expensive and can often be just as decorative as crystal ones. Choose a material that best suits your particular needs and how you will be using the decanter most frequently.

Shape is another difference. You will discover that there are many shapes that you can choose. They will be eye catching and beautiful, but when you are considering a shape you like you should also think about how easy it is going to be to clean after you use it. Designs that incorporate a particularly narrow neck will be much more difficult to clean. Flavoring of wines used afterward will be distorted.

There will be a difference in the decanter that fits the wines it will hold. Containers with broad bottoms and a large amount of inside space are the best choices for red wines. On the other hand, the narrow containers that resemble the original bottles are best suited for white wines. Wider containers with more space provide the extra aeration that red wines need.

Another consideration is whether the decanter you are considering has a vacuum seal. The vacuum seal allows you to preserve your liquor and refrigerate it without having to pour it back into the original bottle. Liquor can then be consumed at a later time instead of all at once. All the aspects that you enjoy will be preserved.

The lip cut is another aspect. Rounded lips can cause a mess. Pouring spouts have rubber seals to prevent leaks, but these seals do not sit properly on rounded lips and lead to leaks while pouring. Always choose lips that are cut flat so the seal can meet with the lip and work properly.

Your final consideration is the style. It is a good idea to choose a style that suits your glasses. Sometimes, you can find complete sets that include the glasses and container. In other instances, you must choose separate pieces that complement each other. For example, if you do not own a complete service of glasses and a decanter, you can purchase them together but if you simply need a decanter, you can choose one to offset the design of your glasses.

Wine decanters can be quite beneficial. They can be used for casual or formal gatherings. If you choose a decanter that fit your needs, it will be worth the investment you might have to make. Some people choose one for formal uses and one for more casual instances. Regardless of which direction you go in your choice, decanters help people enjoy the wines that they contain even more.
