How Healthy Food Helped Me as an Adult

By Rob Sutter

As I'm positioned in front of my laptop with a piece of fruit by my side, I wonder why I enjoy them so much. I'm not exactly the biggest health nut the world has ever known but that doesn't mean I feast on junk food till I'm full. Fruits and vegetables are more preferred to me because those are the kinds of foods I like above any others. It's just a shame that I didn't hold this same sort of mindset true when I came into college.

If there was one thing I really enjoyed about college when I first stepped foot into the building, it was that I had a sense of independence that I lacked in high school. During that time, I was told what to do by those older than me and I'm sure that others can attest to this. I was mostly told what to eat and how to take care of myself when I didn't want to be lectured. However, if I had only known back then that these people knew what they were talking about, perhaps I would have cared for myself better when I was on my own.

When I came into college, it seemed like my attention was taken by the sweets almost instantly. Even though I knew I shouldn't have, I had a bottle of soda with my dinner at school every day I was there. In addition, my sweet tooth couldn't have been easily satiated. I splurged for a few weeks but after that, I started to become sick due to the junk food I put into my body. In order to avoid any further damage to my body, I knew it was time to make some alterations.

I slowly started to learn that healthy food could be just as satisfying for a body in terms of enjoyment as all of that junk food could be. The nutrition was slowly entering my body again and for every bottle of soda I would have taken I ended up swapping each for a bottle of water. Caffeine could have been easily classified as a drug, judging by the difficulty I had curbing that addiction of sorts. Also, I had to make note of companies such as Quorn which were able to craft recipes which incorporate both taste and essential nutrients.

As of now, I feel like I have a better control over my diet. I've all but eliminated soda from my diet and I manage to successfully avoid things like cookies unless I treat myself every now and then. This is certainly an upgrade from where I once was. I couldn't be happier to change my diet up in order to place better food onto my plate. I altered my diet for the better, which leads me to believe that just about anyone else can do the same.
