The Benefits Of Low Fat Dessert Recipes

By Morgan Lee

Just about everyone appreciates a good post-dinner treat. For some people, a fruity delight is the best. Others prefer something cream-based. And of course there are those of us who would die for something chocolate. Whatever way you go, there are easy ways to be able to choose low fat dessert recipes.

Indulging is not always the best way to get low fat, low calorie, food that is low in sugar too. For this reason, many eaters decide to skip it altogether, either because they have to for a health reason or they are trying to lose weight or get healthier.

For people are who are carefully watching their weight or taking steps to lose weight, it can be as simple as making substitutions. Lower fat options are always available if you look in the right place and make a choice to act on it. This could be replacing certain ingredients or simply mixing up your own healthier concoctions.

For example, cheesecake is among the most popular items in the after-dinner category. It sure is delicious and appeals to so many because of its versatility. Variations include NY style, turtle, chocolate, fruit-topped and coconut. That only names a few. There are restaurants and shops that specialize in cheesecake and literally have dozens of options.

This dessert is rich and smooth and, sadly, not a low calorie menu item. But folks can make it in their own homes and really bring down the calorie count. Whole milk can be replaced with 2% milk. Sour cream could be replaced with a light cream and cream cheese is replaceable with Neufchatel. People have even turned out a cake made with ricotta cheese instead.

Making these kinds of substitutions is the best way to cut out some grams of fat. The creams and cheeses can be replaced with lighter versions in other foods too, not just a cheesecake. In addition to 2% milk, skim milk is often acceptable in recipes and will still provide a nice flavor. Another fat cutting area is the crust. Many treats are baked into crusts that are not exactly low cal. Yours could be made of graham crackers and be rolled thinner to make it lighter. Add some cocoa to make a graham chocolaty treat.

A few low fat dessert recipes is a good way to treat yourself. There really is no reason why they should not be enjoyed from time to time, or even every day. It's wise to make smarter choices on what you eat, and to limit the portion size. A little really can keep the sweet tooth at bay.
