Cupcake Decorations for the Time Challenged

By Anya Shiela Richards

Remember the last time you walk past your local pastry shop? Were you enticed with the beautiful decorations on those cakes they sell? Decorating these cakes would actually require a special kind of art that is pretty much evolving especially now that the technology for food processing is gradually improving. There are several people that actually earn a living by doing this craft. They decorate cakes in different colors and shapes. Some of those edible toppers that you often see gracing the cake looks so divine that it seems like you don't want to spoil the overall look by eating any of them. Some are even lifelike, such as those birds that are made of a fondant icing. They seem so real, that it would discourage you from eating them.

You're lucky if you're a baking enthusiast, since you no longer need to buy some of these decorations from your local pastry shop. You can make your own! One of the best and probably the easiest way to learn and enjoy cake decorating is by baking cupcakes. These tiny cakes are so cute to look at, allowing you to embellish it with whatever you want.

Say you're doing them for Christmas - then come up with some of those lovely Christmas tree decoration cupcakes. And if someone you love is celebrating their birthday, make it look personalized by coming up with something that the person loves. If he's a football fanatic, then you include it with some edible football cake topper. Just equip yourself with some creativity and a good recipe book, and that should do the trick.

Here are a few ideas to decorate your cupcakes the "easy" way, and still have fun:

The apple cupcake - Take a cupcake and decorate with red frosting (from confectioner's sugar mixed with red food coloring). Then take a pretzel stick, dip it into melted chocolate and attach to look like a stem. Use a green gumdrop to look like a leaf-and you have an "apple" cake!

Balloon cupcakes - this is the best way to decorate a group of miniature cakes. Choose a selection of several cupcakes and frost them in different colors. Attach some colorful ribbons to and place them at the bottom part of the cake, so they would seem like a group of cute balloons. These will surely look so pretty on the plate.

Footprints - Frost the cupcakes with either white or light colored chocolate icing. Pour over some coconut sprinkles on it in order to come up with a furry look. Use a chocolate mint as the "sole" of the foot, by placing it right at the center, and surround it with three chocolate chips, which serve as toes. These footprints should appear like tiny little paws, which also tastes so yummy!

Grape cupcakes - These little clusters are made by icing the cupcake purple and then placing purple gumdrops on the top in the shape of a cluster. A couple of little green gumdrops complete the look as the "leaves" of the vine.

A bed of roses - Add green food coloring to some coconut and put on top of the cupcake and put some candy roses on top of that. You can also make your own roses from pink frosting and put on the top.
